GHG Accounting

Corporate GHG Accounting

A corporate or organisational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions assessment quantifies the total greenhouse gases produced directly and indirectly from a business or organisation’s activities. Also known as a carbon footprint, it is an essential tool, providing your business with a basis for understanding and managing its climate change impacts.

The drivers for corporate GHG accounting include mandatory GHG reporting in directors’ reports, investment due diligence, shareholder and stakeholder communication, staff engagement, green messaging, and tender requirements for business and government contracts. Accounting for your organisation’s greenhouse gas emissions is increasingly seen as a standard requirement for business.

GHG Accounting in Six Easy Steps

Our Impacts guides you through the steps for calculating your greenhouse gas emissions, making the process easy.

1. Setting up assessment. An experienced analyst helps to set up your assessment, i.e. the time period for the assessment, the parts of your organisation you want to include, and the emission sources that will be covered.

2. Collecting data. Our Impacts lets you enter data in whichever units are easiest for you, the data entry page is intuitive and user-friendly, and there is additional on-line help if needed.

3. Calculating emissions. You don’t have to do anything! Our Impacts automatically selects the most geographically and time-specific emissions factors, and automatically calculates the results. You can see your results build up as you enter your data.

4. Quality Assurance. Once you’ve entered your data, an experienced analyst will check what has been entered, so you can have complete confidence in the results.

5. Viewing results. Our Impacts automatically creates a number of charts and diagrams to help your understand your results, and compare emissions over time. You can also download all your results in an Excel spreadsheet (which also contains all the data and emission factors used in your assessment – for complete transparency and auditability).

6. Reporting. Our Impacts automatically generates pdf reports in accordance with the main reporting standards and initiatives such as the GHG Protocol: Corporate Standard, ISO 14064-1, and the CDP Investor Questionnaire.

Through our 50 years of combined experience, we have completed over 1000 carbon footprint assessments and have helped the sector develop from one-off “carbon footprint assessments” to the professional discipline of greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting that is increasingly seen as a standard requirement for conducting business.

Today we offer this experience to clients through a range of analytical services such as organisational GHG accounting, compiling product greenhouse gas inventories, developing bespoke calculation tools for the web and supporting our web based greenhouse gas accounting service, Our Impacts.

About GHG Accounting

All organisations have carbon footprints and many are measuring and managing them.

With drivers now including mandatory government reporting, investment due diligence, shareholder and stakeholder communication, staff engagement, green messaging and tender requirements for business and government contracts, accounting for your organisation’s greenhouse gas emissions is increasingly seen as a standard requirement for business.

Over the last ten years our analysts have been involved in the emergence of many protocols and standards on GHG accounting that are now globally-recognised frameworks. As a result we are well placed to help you decide which GHG accounting and reporting protocols or standards would be suitable for your business, both now and in the future.

We’ll set the scope of your GHG accounting and help you to manage data collection. We’ll then use our years of experience and research to compile your greenhouse gas accounts based on best available evidence, discuss the results with you – together with our perception of the data quality – and advise you on suitable reporting mechanisms for communicating your results.

Product Lifecycle Assessments

Our analysts have been involved in helping shape the product greenhouse gas inventory standards that have recently emerged, both through our work on the standards themselves and the pilot projects that tested and improved them.

The drivers for compiling product carbon footprints include government compliance schemes, investment due diligence, green messaging, and tender requirements for business and government contracts.

Our analysts have a track record of delivering greenhouse gas inventories for products with supply chains ranging from the simple to the very complex. We are used to helping our clients navigate the many technicalities of product inventories from deciding on whether a cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-grave product inventory is most suitable, through the difference between attributional and consequential lifecycle analyses, to the selection of a suitable emissions allocation method for products and co-products.

If you want to develop an inventory for your product for compliance with commercial or government tender requirements, or want to quantify the greenhouse reduction potential of your product for use in green positioning campaigns we can discuss your needs and advise on the appropriate standards or labels you may wish to report to.
