Mandatory Carbon Reporting in the UK and Europe

On 12 June 2013, the UK department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) laid before Parliament The Companies Act 2006 (Strategic Report and Directors’ Report) Regulations 2013, requiring around 1,100 of the UK’s largest listed companies to report their greenhouse gas emissions every year.

Large businesses across Europe will soon have to report on a raft of non-financial metrics too, including their environmental performance and human rights policies, after the European Parliament overwhelmingly approved new corporate reporting rules in Spring 2014. The regulations will require around 6,000 companies across Europe to publicly disclose information on an annual basis on their environmental performance and other non-financial aspects of their organisation, such as their level of employment diversity and use of anti-corruption measures.

Our Impacts has emerged as the leading system for compliance with mandatory carbon reporting regulations as a result of its combination of class-leading GHG accounting software and support from world respected sustainability practitioners, who have over 100 years of combined experience in sustainability and environmental reporting. Independent reviews by industry experts such as IEMA, the GHGMI, independent assurance by PwC, and CDP Gold Software Partner accreditation attest to this.

Our Impacts for the Energy Saving Opportunities Scheme (ESOS)

Ecometrica’s sustainability accounting platform Our Impacts is ideally suited to assist you in complying with DECC’s Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). Our Impacts‘ robust data collection and flexible calculations engine allow a variety of activity data to be converted into both carbon and energy data to allow easy reporting to the Scheme’s administrators: the Environment Agency.

Our Impacts is ideally suited for measuring energy consumption from buildings, industrial processes and transport all of which are covered by the Scheme. In addition our unique emission factors database includes thousands of calculations which automatically convert energy and fuel consumption into a single energy consumption figure (MWh) which is required alongside carbon emissions figures.

Ecometrica partners with accredited ESOS Lead assessors to provide a full ESOS compliance service alongside our industry leading Carbon Accounting service.

Validation Service for Mandatory Greenhouse Gas Reporting

With the introduction of mandatory greenhouse gas reporting in 2013 it is important for companies to have confidence in the GHG numbers they publish in their Directors’ Reports. Ecometrica’s validation service for mandatory greenhouse gas reporting provides this confidence. The validation service is particularly relevant to companies that undertake their own greenhouse gas assessments in-house.

Ecometrica’s team of analysts have unparalleled expertise in greenhouse gas accounting, and in reviewing our clients’ spreadsheets, calculations, and reports. We have a simple and well-structured review process for identifying improvements, and for ensuring compliance with best practice.

We particularly recommend that a validation exercise is undertaken if in-house processes have not previously been subject to third-party review. An initial or one-off review will identify any significant material errors or issues with in-house assessments, and will help to avoid ongoing errors in reported greenhouse gas emissions.

We also provide a validation service for corporate greenhouse gas assessments (which are not used for mandatory reporting purposes), and for product life cycle assessments.

GHG Product Life Cycle Assessments

Complementary to organisational GHG assessments delivered through Our Impacts, we have expertise in conducing product life cycle assessments, compliant with the PAS 2050 and the GHG Protocol Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard. We are able to match the level of assessment to your business needs, and can provide both low cost streamlined assessments and in-depth studies.

Ecometrica staff have been involved in the development of most of the major standards for product LCA, and we have worked on LCA projects for the UK government, WWF, and the Food and Climate Research Network.

Online Carbon Calculators

We have built online greenhouse gas calculators for some of the largest companies in the world – and we understand how to work effectively and efficiently with website developers. We are also able to provide the API for Our Impacts so that web-based tools always use the most up-to-date and geographically appropriate emission factors – this saves considerable time and cost for maintaining online tools.

Greenhouse Gas Project Accounting

Ecometrica’s analysts have expertise in project level accounting, particularly for community-level climate change mitigation projects. We provided the carbon assessment for a major review of the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund, and have recently been commissioned to write guidance documents for measuring the carbon savings from community projects.

Ecometrica staff were involved in writing the GHG Protocol’s Project Accounting Standard, and are currently on the Technical Working Group drafting the GHG Protocol’s Mitigation Accounting Standard.

Ecometrica has strong links with the University of Edinburgh’s School of GeoSciences, and we have also worked with Imperial College London, Aberdeen University, Napier University, Cranfield University, Forest Research, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA).

We provide services for appraising, reviewing, evaluating, and informing the development of climate change mitigation policies and programmes. We have worked with the UK’s Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), Department for Transport, the Renewable Fuels Agency, the Norwegian Government, NGOs, and research institutions.

Ecometrica is a member of BIFMA’s Energy Working Group, and for its part reviews protocols and methodologies related to GHG accounting in the furniture industry. Senior analyst Ali Rivers is also a published contributor to the Scope 3 and Product accounting standards from WBCSD/WRI.

We also work with businesses and other stakeholders who wish to inform public policy. If you’d like to know more, we’d love to hear from you.

Ecosystem Services

Ecosystem services are the conditions and processes through which natural ecosystems, and the species that make them up, sustain and fulfil human life. We have worked with a range of stakeholders, from national governments to forest communities, to help bring clarity to plans, proposals and policies for the management and use of ecosystems and the services they provide. We have expertise in the provision of tools, methodologies, training, and support to quantify ecosystem services and to ensure that information is put to effective use.

Survey and Mapping

Ecometrica provide world-class survey and mapping of current and historic land cover in forests, plantations, agricultural land and natural ecosystems. We use satellite imagery combined with ground-based surveys to quantify carbon stocks, deforestation, forest degradation and agricultural expansion.

Our survey and mapping products play a vital role in planning and reporting by companies and public sector agriculture and forestry programmes. These services bring clarity to investors or funders, and allow the demonstration of compliance with legal commitments or other management objectives.

Monitoring and Evaluation

Ecometrica provides services for the appraisal, review and evaluation of environmental projects, particularly those funded by payments for ecosystem service mechanisms such as carbon finance. We have expertise in the design and implementation of systems for assessment and monitoring of the ecosystem service benefits from environmental projects at a range of scales. We follow international best practice guidelines and use cutting-edge approaches to ensure clarity in the reporting of ecosystem service benefits.

Capacity Building

Ecometrica provide customised training courses on forest mapping and inventory, remote sensing and GIS, participatory planning processes, and forest carbon project development. These programmes help local stakeholders to develop the skills they need to effectively design and implement projects, and manage the ecosystems under their influence. Our approach has proved successful with companies, government departments, local and international NGOs, and forest-dependent communities.
