Forests 2020 Global Conference Plenary

What is it?

The Plenary at the Forests 2020 Global Conference will explore the future of space technologies in monitoring and protecting tropical forests worldwide. The Plenary will also demonstrate the progress of the Forests 2020 project so far, including a showcase of all the exciting technologies that have been developed to fight deforestation and degradation across the tropics, and how they could be applied to forests all over the world.

With sessions on brand new innovations in drone-based LiDAR surveys, automated forest loss detection, forest fire resilience and using machine learning to generate ultra high-resolution maps, the Forests 2020 Global Plenary is a must-attend event for anyone with an interest in forests, earth observation, supply chain monitoring or emerging space technologies.

Why is the Plenary important?

Tropical forests represent a vital resource, underpinning the livelihoods of billions of people, storing and cycling large amounts of carbon dioxide and water and hosting a large proportion of global biodiversity. Forests 2020 is the UK Space Agency’s flagship project to improve the monitoring of tropical forests worldwide. It involves a £14.2 million UK investment, matched by resources from partner countries Brazil, Indonesia, Colombia, Mexico, Ghana and Kenya. Led by Ecometrica, it involves more than 20 international partner organisations.

What is Forests 2020?

Forests 2020 is a £14.2 million investment from the UK Space Agency to help protect and restore tropical forests in six partner countries using advanced applications of satellite data.

The UK Space Agency’s International Partnership Programme (IPP) is a five-year, £152 million programme designed to partner UK space expertise with overseas governments and organisations. It is funded from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).

Registration for the Forests 2020 Conference is now closed.
