GSi partners with Ecometrica to launch global forest monitoring service

May 30, 2013

Ecometrica, the environmental accounting software developer, has partnered with Global Surface Intelligence (GSi), to help launch GSi’s global forest monitoring service. Our Ecosystem (OE), Ecometrica’s interactive spatial data distribution system, will form the backbone of the pioneering offering, which uses satellite technology to monitor the changes to carbon and biomass in forests and vegetation.

The move by the two Edinburgh-headquartered companies, which both have international operations, reinforces the reputation of the Scottish capital as a global centre of excellence for environmental data services and solutions. Ecometrica was recently highlighted by Verdantix, an independent analyst firm, as one of the top 15 sustainability software brands in the world.

Nigel Douglas, chief executive of GSi, said: “Ecometrica’s technology was identified as the most advanced system for distributing geospatial content products, such as satellite and climate data, providing an edge over other technologies by allowing users to run complex queries in the cloud in real time. The team is at the forefront of developing solutions that address these issues, while providing future-proofing through scalability.”

GSi provides intelligence on the amount of carbon that can be stored and absorbed by trees and vegetation across the entire planet’s surface. The company is spearheading the provision of annual land cover maps and biophysical maps.

Dr Richard Tipper, chief executive of Ecometrica, added: “We look forward to working with GSi to support its global forest monitoring services. This development will allow investors and those managing the supply chain to react quickly to environmental and market developments.”

OE provides easy access to interactive spatial data from satellites and other data layers. Such insight allow corporates and investors without specialist knowledge of geographic information systems to better understand the environmental impacts of forestry, carbon stocks, biofuels and other land-based products, such as sustainable coffee plantations or cotton.

GSi’s data adheres to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) the Good Practice Guidance (GPGs) for Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF). It is the only monitoring and remote sensing solution which adheres to the GPGs and the only solution that provides historical carbon stock and sequestration back data with global coverage. The company has been identified by Scottish Enterprise as a future global player and is part of the organisation’s High Growth initiative.
