Ecometrica Platform: Sustainability Updates for Quarter 1, 2019

It’s been a busy three months at Ecometrica helping clients with calendar year ends, preparing for March year ends, and beginning our preparations for CDP 2019.

In Ecometrica news, we have landed on the FT 1000 list of Europe’s fastest growing companies for the third consecutive year, published a blog on what the Sustainable Development Goals mean for business, and talked with Innovation Forum on their podcast about How to extract easy-to-action insight from satellite data.

We are also pleased to have completed our annual PwC assurance process for our internal controls which underpins our ‘Audit Ready Output’ – you can read a bit more and download a copy of the 2018 audit on our website.

As always, we have been updating Ecometrica Sustainability and our emission factor database. See an overview below:

Ecometrica Sustainability Updates

  • A metadata field has been added to company units to help align with enterprise estate platforms, if you would like to discuss how this can assist with your reporting please do get in touch.
  • Answer comments are now available in the Spreadsheet downloads direct from Ecometrica Sustainability.
  • Only active company units are now displayed on the assessment page reducing the amount of clutter for day-to-day use. The full company structure is still visible in the Organizational Boundary tab and Company Structure section.
  • Implemented Auto-Approval to reduce the burden on self-service clients and speed up client QA – please contact your Ecometrica Analyst to learn more about this functionality.
  • Partner users now have an interface to input direct emissions for both location and market-based results allowing easy integration with offline emissions calculations.
  • Multiple usability and workflow improvements in the new interface.

CDP and Ecometrica

Everyone we assisted with CDP 2018 submission scored a B or higher. With minimal changes to the CDP submission in 2019, we are hoping the disclosure process should be a little smoother this summer. We are continuing to improve our CDP output from Ecometrica Sustainability – please get in touch if you would like to discuss how Ecometrica can assist with your CDP disclosure.

Emission Factor Database Updates

  • Fuel prices updated from Natural Resources Canada.
  • Fuel prices, electricity prices and natural gas prices updated from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
  • Assumptions on calorific value from the EIA – Monthly Energy Review.
  • Fuel efficiency for various vehicles from the EPA Fuel Economy Guide and the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
  • Updated electricity grid factors from the Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações of the Brazil Government.
  • Over 600 updates to district heating factors for Sweden provided by Energi Foretagen.
  • Update to cost of train and bus travel within the UK using latest DfT statistics.
  • Update to emissions associated with sending items via Royal Mail.

Science Based Target submission updates

Finally, you might have already seen that the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) have announced changes to their validation criteria which will come into force in October 2019. The new targets will only be accepted if they are consistent with limiting warming to well-below 2°C or 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Targets consistent with limiting warming to 2°C will no longer be approved.

An earlier deadline of May 15th (April 15th for emerging economies) for SBT submissions has also been published by CDP if you want to include a SBT in your CDP submission.

If you have any questions on the points above, comments on the Ecometrica Platform, or think that others in your organisation would also like to receive details of updates to the Ecometrica Platform, please do get in touch.
