This video summarises Forests 2020, a major project supported by the UK Space Agency, managed by Ecometrica, to improve forest monitoring in six developing countries (Indonesia, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Ghana and Kenya). The video explains the main Earth Observation innovations that will be developed and how this knowledge will be applied practically to help local communities, regional authorities and national institutions improve their understanding of forest change and therefore assist with forest governance.
The footage shows interviews with the UK scientists and local partners in Mexico and was filmed in one of the project window areas in El Ocote Biosphere Reserve in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. In this case study, Forests 2020 is supporting local organisations, such as Cooperativa AMBIO and ECOSUR, to work with local communities and authorities to collect field information that will be used to calibrate satellite images to map potential forest fire risk.
In the current phase of the project, UK partners are working with local partner organisations to improve forest change detection, forest degradation mapping, modelling deforestation risk, forest fire risk and potential areas for restoration.
